Problem Solving: Hit the Target!

Want to play a game like Angry Birds while doing some math and physics? The game Hit the Target! helps you practice understanding graphs and exploring projectile motion while aiming for an accurate shot. The game has two windows: graph window showing two graphs, red and blue, representing the ball’s height and horizontal distance over time respectively; play window, where you launch the ball and see if it hits the target.

Hit the Target!

Adjust the graphs, launch the ball, and try to hit the target in as few attempts as possible!

Graph window: Graphs of the ball’s height and horizontal distance over time.
Play window: The game area for launching the ball and seeing whether it hits the target

Use the instructions and questions below as a guide while playing the game:

  1. What do the red and blue graphs in the graph window represent? What do they mean?
  2. How should you adjust the two graphs so that the ball hits the target? Drag the red or blue points to make your adjustments.
  3. Once you are confident about your adjustments, click "Launch" in the play window and see if the ball hits the target.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 until you hit the target!

Have fun!
